About digwolf

Dig up the details. DNS unearthed.

digwolf is a DNS lookup tool. Enter a domain name and it shows the public DNS records for it: which IP addresses the name points to, where the email goes, which nameservers are in charge, what the TXT records say. Everything is grouped and labelled, so you don't need a terminal, the dig command or much practice reading raw output.

DNS information is public, but it isn't always easy to get at. digwolf is for the times you're setting up a domain, checking an email setup, or trying to work out why something doesn't resolve.

What it does

  • Results show up as they arrive, one record type at a time, so a slow answer doesn't hold up the rest.
  • It looks up 13 record types: A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, NS, SOA, TXT, CAA, SRV, DS, DNSKEY, HTTPS and SVCB.
  • It checks DNSSEC. If a domain's signatures are broken, digwolf reports a validation failure instead of showing an empty result.
  • It uses more than one resolver. Lookups go first to a validating resolver running on digwolf's own server. If that can't answer, digwolf asks Cloudflare, then Google Public DNS.
  • Each result says where it came from. The lookup details at the bottom of a results page list which resolver answered, how long it took, and whether the answer came from a cache.
  • No account needed.

Worth knowing

digwolf asks DNS resolvers what they currently hold, so you're seeing their view at that moment, and different resolvers can differ. The TTL next to a record is the time the resolver says is left on it, not the value in the domain's zone file. The FAQ covers TTLs, caching and why answers can disagree.

It won't solve every DNS problem, but it's a quick way to see what the public DNS says about a name. Look up a domain.
